Debbie has interviewed over 200 people for her podcast, Design Matters, and the opportunity to ask her the questions was exciting, albeit slightly intimidating. With 30 years of professional experience and a multitude of personal projects under her belt, Debbie shows no intention of slowing down—this woman is a force in the world of design. But there’s more to her story than her current successes.

Be brave, bold, and above all, keep trying.

In fact, Debbie was generous in sharing about the years of rejection and despair that she experienced before finding her niché. Her stories and insights will challenge you, encourage you, and confirm that you’re not alone in your struggles—but in Debbie’s words, sometimes “the worst moments of our life can turn out to the best.” So go on, get up, hold your head high, and move forward in your pursuits.

Even as “just a letterer” I learned how to code for the web and learn new type design applications.

Commenting on the stupidity of the question “What is your favorite font?” Hische encouraged attendees to stare closely at type, to learn how to select and use type well to express meaning, and most importantly, how to actually use the hidden technology that goes into type design and production. She passionately appealed to the audience to advocate for the value of type design, fearing the alternative being a decline in awesome type.

Jason Santa Maria was one of two speakers at the Kickstarter Benefit Creative Mornings in New York in October of 2012. In this honest and insightful presentation Jason talks about “Saying NO”.

It might be saying no to a project or job, or even something that you think you can’t say no to, but finding the strength to set your own priorities for what you want is one of the most crucial things you can do in life. Saying no used to make me uncomfortable, and despite making many mistakes on my way there, I’ve learned to feel good about saying it. The talk is just a short 20 minutes, but sums up most everything I’ve learned about the topic in all my years working and living.

This article is still being written.

WordPress publishers now can easily integrate Facebook features, such as social publishing and mentions, through the new Facebook for WordPress plugin.

The plugin was built by Facebook engineers in collaboration with open source partners, and makes it simple for anyone to make their WordPress site more social – no coding required. The plugin will also work on mobile and support internationalization.

Social Publishing

Once the plugin is installed, you can cross-post content published to WordPress to your Facebook Timeline and Fan Pages you manage. You can also mention the names of Pages and friends as you post to further distribute your content.

WordPress Widgets

The following social plugins are available as WordPress widgets:

Activity Feed: Shows readers their friends’ activity on the site, such as likes and comments.

Recommendations: Gives readers personalized suggestions for pages on your site they might like, as well as a Recommendations Bar option to give users the option to add content to their Timeline as they read.

Customizable Like, Subscribe and Send buttons.

Comments Box: Makes it easy for people to comment on your site and post back to Facebook, and includes moderation tools. The plugin also features automatic SEO support for Facebook Comments, so search engines can index them to improve your site’s visibility.

Black List Brewing | A Beer + Art Project

Across the Wire, Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe and The Duluth Scene are already using the plugin to connect with their audiences while providing users with more engaging and personalized experiences. The plugin is available for all sites on WordPress.com VIP as well.

WordPress powers 16.6 percent of the web, from The New York Times to People Magazine, and attracts more than 600 million unique visitors each month. We hope the plugin makes it possible for WordPress content to be shared even more widely among people.

Updated 11/25/2012

<del datetime="2012-11-25T15:42:37+00:00">Quip</del> Tweetglass is a Twitter app for iPad with a special focus on streamlining and condensing your timeline, especially when it comes to conversations.

With <del datetime="2012-11-25T15:42:37+00:00">Quip</del> Tweetglass, replies show their context right where they are. You don’t have to drill down away from the timeline for every reply because Quip groups them by default and arranges them the right way around for you.

HERE’S WHAT’S NEW:

New name (now Tweetglass, formerly Quip)

View your Twitter Lists

Streaming (over wifi, when auto-refresh is on in Settings)

Auto-refresh intervals of 1, 5 or 10min (or manual refresh)

A new ‘Who’s tweeting’ notification UI which lets you see who is posting new tweets without having to change your position in the timeline

Read Later services (Instapaper, Pocket and Readability) via long-tapping links, which also includes Copy link, Open link and Open in Safari options

Localizations for French, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese

Better timeline scrolling performance

Native Twitter pics are larger and show more detail

Double-tap the Messages icon to mark all as read

New animation when expanding and collapsing conversations

When set to auto-refresh (which changes to streaming when there is a wifi network), new tweets appear above if you’re partway through your timeline, but if you’re at the very top, they push everything else down so you can keep it open at your desk and go hands-free

UI tweaks & bug fixes

Please also note that the app’s Twitter account has changed from @getquip to @tweetglassapp.

Here’s a quick and easy way to implement the Open Graph Protocol in WordPress to share your Vimeo videos on Facebook. First, add the below code to the header.php file of your theme and change the og:site_name to match the name of your website.

<?php if ( get_post_meta($post->ID, 'vimeo', true) ) : ?>
<meta property="og:url" content="<?php the_permalink() ?>" >
<meta property="og:title" content="<?php the_title(); ?>" >
<meta property="og:description" content="<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'description', true) ?>" >
<meta property="og:type" content="video" />
<meta property="og:image" content="<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'image', true) ?>" />
<meta property="og:video" content="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'vimeo', true) ?>" />
<meta property="og:video:secure_url" content="https://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'vimeo', true) ?>" />
<meta property="og:video:type" content="application/x-shockwave-flash" />
<meta property="og:video:width" content="640" />
<meta property="og:video:height" content="360" />
<meta property="og:site_name" content="Across the Wire" />
                <?php endif; ?>

Next, add three new Custom Fields called vimeo, image, and description. Add the video location of the video (ie. 22213718), the location of the image you’d like to use, and a brief description you’d like to use for your post. You may have to activate these two functions. The Screen Options pull down tab is located in the upper right corner of your Dashboard. If they are not listed, you will have to add support manually by editing your functions.php file.

'supports' => array('title', 'editor', 'thumbnail', 'comments', 'revisions', 'excerpt', 'custom-fields')

Warning: This is only an example. Please use extreme caution when editing your functions.php file.

Frank Chimero is incredibly passionate about design — this is clear from his talks at NAconf, Build, and the Do Lectures, as well as his book “The Shape Of Design”. Frank manages to communicate his thoughts and ideas in a way that is both entertaining and enlightening. It’s hard to pinpoint one takeaway from this book, it’s that incredible.
Craig Mod on the death of the cover “as we know it,” and what we can do about it now that it’s dead. Craig’s essay is nothing less than inspiring.

The cover image may help quickly ground us, but our eyes are drawn by habit to number and quality of reviews. We’re looking for metrics other than images — real metrics — not artificial marketing signifiers. Blurbs from humans. Perhaps even humans we know! And within the jumble of the Amazon.com interface, the cover feels all but an afterthought.
